So how's the work coming?

Since my last few posts have been about some of the fun adventures we’ve had, I thought I’d turn back to work for a moment. While getting workshops off the ground has been a bit slow, I have a meeting later this week with the director of public health in Vilanova I la Geltrú, who was particularly interested in training his staff. Public health is one of the major areas I’ve been focusing on this past year, with ongoing trainings with
Close to Home, and a new partnership with the University of
Arizona’s College of Public Health. I’ve been coming across more and more projects using digital stories particularly as an outreach tool for diabetes within communities of color. Center for Digital Storytelling did a
similar workshop in Salina, CA, to the one I did in Arizona. I’m not sure exactly what the focus here in Catalonia will be, but I’d like to get a workshop in before the end of the year to pilot the project and figure out what needs to be modified before the winter trainings.
Other than public health, the other main groups participating in training institutes this year were adult educators. The
adult ed. programs throughout Arizona have been leading workshops in all kinds of GED and ESL classes, and we also worked with the Dep’t of Adult Ed. in Boston. I’ll be presenting a bit of this work on Friday, when I get to go to Milan for the Filografia conference.
Filografia is an initiative bringing together multimedia and creative writing for adult education/training organizations in Italy, Germany, Greece, and France. Good fit, eh? I had written to them earlier this fall when looking into related projects in the EU, and they invited me to come present at their annual meeting. I’m looking forward to seeing their work, some of which is based in “digital puppetry.” As well as seeing the duomo. Next week, photos from Milan!
