San Francisco Media Literacy Workshop

By Jen - Posted on 23 October 2009

With limited time and resources, teachers are constantly struggling to keep up with rapidly changing media technologies while trying to help students gain the necessary 21st century learning skills in media literacy. In collaboration with the San Francisco Film Society, Creative Narrations offered a one-day workshop for teachers on September 26th.  Participants from different Bay Area schools learned how to mix media creation and media literacy into the classroom through a variety of activities and tools.  Thanks to all who made it out!

I think that this is a great idea for those teachers who are struggling to keep up with rapidly changing media technologies. This workshop seems like a great way to teach teachers how to incorporate online education in the classroom. I think that learning how to mix media creation and media literacy into the classroom is an outstanding skill set that will prove to be valuable for any teacher wanting to advance their career in education.

The truth is we all need media literacy to become part of the school experience to cause certain positive change in both curriculum and teaching but to do this educators need to become media literate first. We provide them with bookcases full books to teach from so why not volumes (or rather gigabytes) of new media? Teachers cannot teach what they do not know, and place value on, themself. This is an excellent workshop idea, hope they bring some to my area soon.

It's one of the greatest sightseeings of San Francisco. My science essays get the greatest mark for this bridge.

I was just reading the sffs.org website and they have some great stuff lined up for the 54th San Francisco International Film Festival. I think it is a really useful colaboration for students when you join forces for events like this. I am design teacher in the UK and we have just run a logo design competition for our students combining media technolgies of todays society into a new application they would like to see. The entrants produced some outstanding work but this wouldn't be the case without a collaborative approach from one of the leading social platforms whom provided us with some guidance and imagery we could use in order to understand how a genuine social platform considers the most effective marketing techniques. The whole exercise was something quite brillant and we will be running it again next year for our design students.

Hello,

I'm being a teacher for 20 years and would likely participate in this wonderful workshop. I bet with such interesting topic there will be generating lots of different discussions. And not for just paper writing staff, hope some projects will start on these basis.

Best Regards,
and see you soon!
