The IAF, or Industrial Areas Foundation, is considered to be one of the strongest network of community organizations in the country. Beginning in Chicago in the 1930's, the Alinsky model of teaching citizens about self-interest and power subsequently became replicated throughout the country. Alinsky advocated for "people's organizations" committed to training "ordinary people" to take charge of their own neighborhoods. These organizations are institutionally based, primarily operating through churches, synogogues, and schools. There are currently more than sixty IAF organizations throughout the country, with fifteen active in Texas.
