Some thoughts on the process... So this time I had a video camera. I had powerful stories. But I also had a number of concerns. From technical difficulties to feeling uncomfortable about taping people, incorporating technology into research adds added layers of complexity to an already challenging process. I called my roommate the first night, convinced I had broken the camera. And that was just the beginning....

What I learned.... I found that as much as technology can create distance between "the researcher" and "the researched", it can bring people from different worlds together. Over the past few months, the people I met in the Rio Grande Valley and I have shared in the excitement of documenting their work. We have zapped digital images across the internet, sent video tapes through the mail, and brainstormed the possibilities that digital media can bring to the field of community organizing. I have learned to trust my instincts. I have learned to bring along extra batteries. I have learned that while a camera can inhibit some, when people feel they have a story to tell, they will tell it. This website is ultimately my interpretation of what I heard. But I also hope that it provides a public forum, a public voice, for the multiple stories of change and transformation that are occuring in the Rio Grande Valley. |
